'Pokémon's "PokéToons" Short Is a Homage to 'Looney Tunes'
A throwback to vintage slapstick, but with modern day Pokémon.
The Pokémon Company uploaded a new animated short to its official Pokémon Kids TV YouTube channel called “PokéToons” that harkens back to the times of slapstick cartoons. The short features Pokémon Scraggy and the ominous Fairy-type Mimikyu and also highlights vintage animations alongside all the comedic charm of an early Looney Tunes cartoon.
This dialogue-free short pays homage to traditional Warner Bros. hallmarks, including its iconic title card. The rings, which usually feature characters like Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, now showcase Pikachu and a Pokéball instead. The cartoon depicts a hungry Scraggy chasing after a bag of heart-shaped beans on a train, where it encounters the Pikachu imposter Mimikyu living within the sack.
The Japanese Pokémon Kids TV channel normally posts CGI animations of its franchise creatures alongside singalongs and short stories. Live-action clips of children interacting with actors in mascot suit are also popular on the channel.
According to IGN, Taku Inoue directed “Pokétoons” alongside Miyako Makio, Ryousuke Senbo, Shinichi Suzuki, and Shuya Yoshisato doing the animation. Tsutomu Ikeda produced the backgrounds while Kei Tsuda created the music.
In related news, The Pokémon Company pledged $200,000 USD to the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the NAACP.
