Kamasi Washington Scores Michelle Obama's Netflix Documentary 'Becoming'
Out on May 15th.
Kamasi Washington has scored Michelle Obama‘s new Netflix documentary Becoming. This project follows Washington’s feature on Thundercat’s “Interstellar Love” single released last month.
Becoming was shot between 2018 to 2019 for approximately six months. The documentary paints a candid portrait of the former First Lady’s life, from her early childhood to her marriage with Barack Obama, while detailing her 34-city arena tour. Washington worked closely with the film’s director Nadia Hallgren to come up with a “musical palette” that appropriately supports the documentary.
Washington mentioned in a statement, “I’m so thankful to her for the opportunity to be a part of this. Barack and Michelle Obama’s time as President and First Lady had an impact on the history of this country and the world that is hard to put into words, but both Michelle Obama’s book and Nadia Hallgren’s film do an amazing job of it!” The soundtrack will consist of a total of 15 soaring jazz tunes, to be released through the label Young Turks.
The upcoming soundtrack for Becoming will be available on May 15.
