Three months ago, Maison Margiela unveiled a “Riace Bronze” iteration of its Cross Derby silhouette. Showcasing its latest seasonal piece, the designer label has returned with yet another glossy rendition of the shoe, but this time with a sleek gunmetal makeover.
Maison Margiela is no stranger to playfully reconstructing familiar silhouettes, and this shoe is a good example. It incorporates the body of a formal dress shoe with that of a technical cross runner, delivering a look that honors both classic and modern design. The top of the shoe comes with subtle tonal top-stitching that traces the edges of the collar, heel and vamp. Maison Margiela’s signature single-stitch motif is placed at the upper backstay, while the front of the shoe sees thin round laces and a smoothly rounded toe. Contrasting the top half of the shoe is a large rugged midsole that’s slightly raised at the heel. It boasts angular ridges from the rear to the midsection, tapering subtly near the front. As a final touch, the silhouette sees an aggressively serrated outsole at the heel, offset by flat treading at the forefoot.
The Maison Margiela Gunmetal Cross Derby is currently available at SSENSE’s website for $1355 USD.
