Paul Wall & Benny The Butcher Reflect on Their Successes in "Overcame"
Over soulful Statik Selektah instrumentals.
Back in November, Paul Wall and Statik Selektah put out a seven-track EP titled Give Thanks, spotlighting their lead single “OverCame,” featuring Benny The Butcher. The song now has accompanying visuals, showing Clean Plate and Benny The Butcher exchanging verses over a soulful beat.
Clocking in at just under two and a half minutes, “OverCame” is the fourth track off Give Thanks. Both rappers pen lyrics about coming out on top after overcoming past struggles. Doused in vibrant 16th-note hi-hats, groovy basslines and regal piano chords, Statik Selektah’s gospel-inspired instrumentals set the perfect stage for the self-reflective lyrics. Notable quotes include verses from Benny The Butcher like “This year I’m tucking two point four if the Lord willin’ / Flood the Rollie face and hope I can shake off the poor feeling,” followed by Paul Wall’s lines like “I chase the sack like Ed Oliver, shout out Don Toliver / Most great leaders first the followers.”
