Samsung Patents Surround Display Smartphone With a Sliding Camera
It’s all screen.
After releasing a series of smartphones with flexible displays, South Korean tech giant Samsung is now taking it to the next level with plans to create a new phone that’s 100 percent screen.
Under a patent simply named “electronic device” back in July at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the company’s sketches depict a smartphone design completely wrapped by displays that join together to create a seamless experience. A 70-page filing shows two large AMOLED or LCD screens on either surface of the device, surrounded by semi-rounded displays that run along the edges to create a beveled surface, all enclosed by a transparent casing for protection. The phone then slides apart down the center to reveal a hidden camera, which is neatly concealed when not in use.
For a more realistic look at what Samsung could develop, LETSGODIGITAL‘s designer Giuseppe Spinelli made renderings based on the patent sketches, which you can view above.
