COSTS Reveals Sashiko Elements on Upcoming FDMTL x New Balance 2002R

Adding to the popular New Balance 2002R GALLERY project, Shenzhen-based retailer COSTS has teamed up with Japanese label FDMTL to reimagine the sneaker model.

Drawing from FDMTL’s expertise, the collaboration feature five different textile types in a celebration of traditional Japanese denim craftsmanship. The upper found on the contemporary take inspired by tradition utilizes a pearl weave base accented by overlays of matching blue suede. Aside from different blue tone stitching all around, a two-tone Sashiko fabric is used on the tongue and heel of the shoe.

Branding comes in the form of printed insoles, framed “N” motifs at the midfoot, embroidery at the vamp and tongue, printed New Balance and 2002R hits found at the rear and co-branded laces marked by dashes. Rounding up the design of the shoe are blue sockliners and ABZORB midsoles assisted by SBS ABZORB heel cushioning paired with the Stability Web and N-ergy outsole offer arch support and shock absorption while continuing the blue tones of the upper. Additionally, each shoe comes with a special shoebox that features a detachable detail that reveals COSTS’ signature pattern.

COSTS’ FDMTL x New Balance 2002R collaboration will be available exclusively at COSTS and FDMTL locations mid-November.

As one of the partners of New Balance 2002R GALLERY project, COSTS has worked with Japanese denim fashion brand FDMTL and New Balance to launch the 2002R collaboration. The whole body of sneakers using 5 different types of fabric presents an attitude of traditional craftsmanship on denim. For the details of sneakers, Lychee Tattoo stitching representing COSTS’ image is implanted, the shoe tongue and heel are made of FDMTL iconic Sashiko fabric to convey the spirit of open-minded and breakthrough. “Tradition” and “Open” seem to be opposite concepts, but in the multi-culture of modern society, they are indeed the attitudes of youth culture to life. The packaging shoe box with a detachable surface can show COSTS’ iconic pattern underneath, it represents the uniqueness of this collaboration and matches the concept of “breakthrough” perfectly.
