Update (October 22, 2020): COMME des GARÇONS has granted official imagery of its collaborative Salomon sneakers. Two styles of shoes have been realized in the Japanese brand’s preferred monochrome tones, executed in both tonal black and white. One style, the “Sense Feel,” features Salomon’s signature Quicklace vamp, complete with reflective tongue branding, atop a massive platform sole (in homage to COMME des GARÇONS’ SS13 collection), while the other is a rework of the RX Slide 3.0 recovery sneaker, transforming the low-profile model into a Mary Jane shoe akin to other COMME des GARÇONS footwear styles.
In a statement, COMME des GARÇONS founder enthused pride for the collaboration, citing Salomon’s open-mindedness in achieving the adventurous shapes she sought to create and emphasizing her longtime appreciation for the French brand. “It took a lot of time and effort to realize this collaboration,” she said. “I am very happy.
The collaborative sneakers will launch at COMME des GARÇONS flagships, Dover Street Market stores and other stockists in March, Japanese sources report. The platform shoes will retail for $350 USD and the Mary Jane RX Slide 3.0 weighs in at 210 USD.
Original Story (October 21, 2020): COMME des GARÇONS has only doubled down on its footwear collaborations over the past year, with its sub-labels readying special ASICS, New Balance and Nike all while the mainline menswear branch drops its first in-house Vibram-soled runner. For Spring/Summer 2021, the Japanese brand’s mainline womenswear line has teased yet another bespoke trainer, this time in partnership with French sportswear brand Salomon.
Unlike most Salomon collaborations, COMME des GARÇONS didn’t merely execute a special colorway atop a stock model; instead the avant-garde brand completely transformed a trail shoe with a brand new outsole. Thick platform soles grant the wearer nearly a half-foot of extra height, while Salomon’s signature Quicklace system makes the tonal white and black sneakers a breeze to fasten or remove.
The collection’s voluminous dresses — which feature Mickey Mouse patterns and imagery reminiscent of the COMME des GARÇONS PLAY heart logo — occasionally obscured much of the uppers but much of the shoe above appears relatively unchanged, down to the “S” logo on the tongue.
