Following the news that legendary film Akira had been remastered into 4K for an upcoming IMAX release — followed by the announcement of its screenings across the U.S. — it has now been announced that the new version will also release in U.K. cinemas. The remastered version of the 1988 film will be shown on IMAX screen across the U.K. and Ireland, with more than 200 locations due to show Akira for a very limited three-day run from October 7 until October 9.
The new version of the movie had been due to make its debut at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2020, before the event was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Following that news, Akira released at 36 Japanese theaters in April of this year and performed will at the domestic box office. Later this year, a limited-edition Blu-ray box set of the remaster will also release.
To mark the release of the remastered Akira, a new trailer has been released. For more information on which theaters and cinemas across the U.K. and Ireland are participating, head over to the specially-launched website.
