'AKIRA' to Receive an IMAX Theatrical Run
Experience Neo Tokyo in 4K.

The glorious 4K remaster of Katsuhiro Otomo‘s AKIRA is hitting IMAX theaters next month, and Toho Studios has shared a stunning new poster to celebrate its run. According to reports, the 1988 animated dystopian thriller will open in 36 Japanese IMAX theaters on April 3. The theatrical run precedes the release of the film’s 4K remaster set that will showcase a series of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes features from the film, including sound clips Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s sound clips and still images from the movie’s storyboards.
Meanwhile, Taika Waititi‘s live-action remake of Akira has seen its fair share delays, the latest one being stripped of its May 21, 2021 release date. The director still insisted it was happening prior to the delay, however, but there’s been no official word from Waititi or Warner Bros. as of writing.
Check out the poster below and take a look at the list of Japanese cinemas that will play AKIRA starting April 3.
