COMME des GARÇONS and Nike Sportswear are continuing an expansive partnership with a murky take on the classic Waffle Racer. CDG and Nike last collaborated on the traditional running shoe in 2017, but this new makeup discards the Waffle’s classic nylon uppers and old-school branding in favor of a look that’s significantly more grunge-adjacent.
Although the all-black color palette may be simple, the detail is anything but. Large denim Swooshes on the lateral and medial side are ridged with thoroughly frayed detailing, adding a perfectly imperfect texture that intentionally breaks up the crisp look provided by the black suede base. A leather heel tab and nylon tongue further the material mix, with the only deviations from the blacked-out styling arriving via large white CDG stamps on the heel and insoles, plus a small white Nike hit on the fabric tongue tag. A trim black EVA foam midsole and waffle iron-style black rubber outsole finalize the look.
The COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Waffle Racer will hit stockists like Dover Street Market towards the end of January, and is set to retail for ¥25,000 JPY (approximately $228 USD).
