Apple Trialling Fake Eye Contact System in New FaceTime Update

Dubbed “FaceTime Attention Correction.”

Apple has begun trialling a new update to iOS 13 that will include a feature mimicking eye contact during FaceTime. The issue has arisen due to the location of the camera on an iPhone, which means that it is impossible to make direct eye contact with someone you are talking to via FaceTime.

The new feature — named FaceTime Attention Correction — is set to be rolled out on the iPhone XS and XS Max. The system works using ARCore, which is the same technology that Apple currently uses on animoji.

Apple’s new technology is the latest fix to a problem that tech companies have been working on for a while. Back in 2018, Samsung applied for a patent for a new display that featured a camera behind the screen. You can take a look at how Apple’s FaceTime Attention Correction works below.
