As we countdown the hours until tonight’s main event, one in which Anthony Joshua looks to defend his Heavyweight belts against Andy Ruiz Jr.,
This past year, Joshua visited Under Amour’s Human Performance Center in Portland and worked closely with Innovation Design Ambassador John Acevedo and Technical Footwear Innovation Lead Alan Toronjo to “evolutionize” the traditional boxing boot. Spending months studying the champ’s movements, the team decided to focus on enhancing and maintaining AJ’s power, starting from the ground up with an outsole traction pattern that provides superior movement and 360-degree torque.
Next, designers crafted a rounded midsole that not only aids AJ’s natural motion, but it also counteracts any wobbling back towards the ropes should he ever get stunned by a hard hit. Lastly, and most importantly, this boot stars UA’s new, never-before-seen material innovation, dubbed “Project Chameleon” for its ability to move symbiotically with the body. This auxetic material, used to form the entire forepart of the upper, delivers a dynamic, second-skin feel that belies the unusual durability and strength of the material.
