Ann Demeulemeester Docks Nautical Inspirations for SS20
A nod to the blue-collar workers of Antwerp’s port.
Ann Demeulemeester has joined Paris Fashion Week with its Spring/Summer 2020 collection, following up its previous Fall/Winter 2019 lineup with a round of nautical-themed garments.
Dubbed “The Northern Sea,” Ann Demeulemeester’s latest 2020 collection is made up of captain’s trench coats, double-breasted blazers, various traditional sailor uniforms and berets, layered in Summer-friendly fabrics like silk and linen, criss-cross laces, thick cuffs and wide open collars. The seaside inspirations are a nod to the blue-collar sailors, dockworkers and fishermen of Antwerp’s port.
While the collection maintains Demeulemeester’s signature black-and-white color codes, splashes of violet, cobalt, red and gold were added into the assemblage. One highlight in the range is a billowing overcoat that bears a silky cobalt sheen. Gold stripes are placed under the buttons on two sides of the front, while black nylon lines the inners. The coat comes with matching pants, also trimmed with the same stripes. Another standout piece is a black trench detailed with contrast seams and stitching – accents like white buttons at the front and cuffs as well as a hanging waist belt complete the piece. A distinctive design feature added to the garments is its removable parts; things like collars, cuffs, sleeves can be taken off or buttoned up in various ways. Other pieces like naval sling bags, loose tank tops, netted shirts, vests and other flowing garments round up the expansive range.
