Though the first collection only just hit stores, Hedi Slimane‘s latest CELINE collection is a step towards differentiating his new project from past efforts. Though the inspiration remained similar to past Slimane lines — retro rock ‘n’ roll meets ’70s Hollywood — the garments offer more variety, some disparity in silhouettes and plenty of unapologetically loud statement pieces.
Though Slimane’s beloved skinny suits return in force, they’re upgraded with slightly looser trousers and sophisticated features that include subtle chalk stripes and double breasted detailing. More unconventional items come by way of hickory stripe overalls and the plethora of straight leg, washed denim trousers, complete with raw hems. The rugged attitude is a playful subversion of the Slimane staples, like sequin outerwear, leather snakeskin stadium jackets and leopard sweaters.
Tiger camo coats, woven bags and velvet track jackets are another step towards distinguishing this latest range, though Slimane does channel his style icons through key looks. For instance, Serge Gainsbourg comes through by way of insouciant scarves and billowing trench coats. Still, the more relaxed jeans and the multi-faceted outerwear represent a casual step towards Slimane further elevating his menswear offerings under the CELINE banner.
