Already expected to be an event filled with iconic looks, Met Gala 2019 saw yet another star-studded series of red carpet entries. This year, attendees put together some of the boldest outfits under the theme of “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s launch of its new exhibition. The concept of the exhibition was inspired by American writer, filmmaker, philosopher, teacher, and political activist, Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay of the same name, which put forth the definition of camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
Here are some of the best outfits of over-the-top expression from the biggest names of the worlds of fashion, music, entertainment and art. Red carpet highlights include Zendaya in her Disney inspired outfit, Ezra Miller stunning the crowd with his face makeup and shining suit, Kylie and Kendall Jenner showing off contrasting feather-assisted dresses and Naomi Campbell making her presence known with a bold purple look. More showy outfits came from Jared Leto who carried his own head and Winnie Harlow who showed her expression of a modern-day goddess. While Serena Williams matched her bright dress with a pair of Off-White™ x Nike Air Force 1 Low “Volt” and Tommy Hilfiger showed his American pride with a bedazzled USA flag suit.
Some of music’s finest also used the event to express their avant-garde fashion sense with Lady Gaga leading the pack literally accompanied by a cast, Katy Perry dressed as a chandelier, while Cardi B came in a dress that features that featured one of the longest gowns of the night. Travis Scott showed up in a military-inspired Dior outfit with girlfriend with Kylie Jenner and Kanye West showed up with Kim Kardashian in a simple Dickies jacket. Frank Ocean also kept things low-key with a Prada anorak and Harry Styles showed up in a sheer piece with Alessandro Michele.
