The collection is comprised of three pieces — the “Collective Backpack,” “Tote Rucksack” and “Launch Backpack.” Each is adorned with psychedelia-inspired prints, customized lightning skulls, dancing bear graphics and a Timbuk2 swirl “Steal Your Face” velcro patch. The design is based on the music of the rock band Grateful Dead and the on-the-go commuter, so the duo also included a clear window for easy-scanning of concert tickets or commuter passes.
Speaking on the collection, Andrea Chynoweth, Timbuk2 Global Creative Director says, “Grateful Dead is the epitome of the culture clash gone right. Fusing rock, folk, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, jazz, reggae, psychedelic and space rock, the Bay Area group was the sound of a global movement in the sixties.”
Kei Hirosawa says, “Instead of designing a traditional bag, I wanted to create a line made for the city commute, which is why I immediately thought of Timbuk2. With this collection, I took my love for the Grateful Dead to create a line of bags I’ve never seen before.”
The BEAMS x Timbuk2 “Grateful Dead Collection” will launch online on June 3 on the Timbuk2 website, with each bag priced at $189 USD. A pre-launch of the collection will release at physical Timbuk2 stores on May 30.
