Doug Aitken Will Launch a Giant Mirrored Balloon Across Massachusetts
Public art takes to the skies for two weeks in July.
For his next effort, multifaceted artist Doug Aitken will launch a reflective hot air balloon stateside for a project entitled New Horizon. Mimicking a shiny marble, the suspended artwork will be on view for two weeks in July.
Aitken realized the ambitious undertaking with the Trustees of Reservations as part of the nonprofit organization’s Art & the Landscape initiative, a program dedicated to conservation and preservation while also showcasing large-scale works connected to nature. “This is a moment where a lot of us — almost everybody — is apprehensive about the future,” said Boston-based curator Alonzo to WBUR-FM. “I see this balloon functioning as a beacon that brings people together to have conversations about the future — and then some fun listening to music.”
New Horizon is slated for 14 appearances at eight locations in Massachusetts. View the schedule below and then head over to Doug Aitken’s website to learn more.
In other public art initiatives, House of Trees recently launched a traveling exhibition displaying politically-charged banners made in collaboration between renowned female artists and refugees-craftswomen.
