The Members of Phony Ppl Share What Makes Them Feel Larger Than Life

It’s hard to put Phony Ppl‘s sound in a box. Comprised of five members — Elbee Thrie, Elijah Rawk, Matt “Maffyuu” Byas, Aja Grant and Bari Bass — the collective’s music lies at the intersection of R&B, funk, rock, new-age soul, hip-hop and jazz. Since assembling in 2008, the Brooklyn-based band has evolved their musical roots to finesse a sound that can’t be replicated.
As with any boundary-pushing artist, the group isn’t afraid to write their own rules, as evidenced in their recent performance at Smokin’ Grooves Fest in Long Beach, California.
