Supreme‘s collaborative line with COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT has been a longstanding tenet of streetwear. And now, with the latest iteration of the range dropping today, we decided to look at the best pieces from the archive and let the readers decide what was the best piece they ever made.
The items we’ve included range from the latest drop, to the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which was modeled by Adwoa Aboah and Lucien Clarke. Going from the first Nike Air Force 1 Low, to the digi-print Vans Authentic, be sure to cast your vote below and let us know what we may have missed in the comments section.
2012: Polka Dot Tee
Original release date: March 16, 2012
COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT was launched in 1988 as a slightly more relaxed take on the world of Rei Kawakubo, so teaming up with Supreme back in 2012 made perfect sense. The lookbook starred Adwoa Aboah and Lucien Clarke in a regular London townhouse, a statement about where the collaboration saw itself. The Polka Dot Tee was a standout from the range, using CdG SHIRT’s signature pattern to strong effect on the BOGO top. As you’d expect for any Supreme item from 2012, it’s firmly moved into grail territory.
2012: Vans Authentic “Pinstripe”
Original release date: March 16, 2012
The other standout from that collection was the collab with Vans. Focusing on the Authentic and the Sk8-Hi models, the former was the version that garnered the most attention at the time. Using a pinstripe pattern typically seen in CdG SHIRT’s shirting — also used on the collab shirts — it was a simple but pleasing twist on an iconic shoe shape. Compared to later shoes, it was relatively subdued, but that doesn’t mean it’s any lesser for it.
2013: Vans Authentic “Stripe/Digi Print”
Original release date: June 27, 2013
The next collaboration from the two companies was a change lookbook-wise, using Jason Dill and Chloe Sevigny to front the campaign, however there was one constant. Continuing on from the previous year, the Vans Authentic returned, and this time it used a digi-print pattern on an upper panel alongside the contrasting CdG SHIRT check fabric usually used on the Japanese brand’s shirting.
2013: Digi Print Jacket
Original release date: March 14, 2013
The digi-print pattern makes a return here in prominent form. A clear standout from the collection, this coat uses a fairly standard Supreme shape while taking CdG SHIRT’s standout digital play on a camo graphic throughout. The piece was created to blend in with the previous year’s polka-dot pattern hoodie and T-shirt. While the inverted Supreme BOGO was also a standout, it’s fair to say that this jacket was still the most popular piece from the clothing part of the capsule.
2014: Reversible Bomber Jacket with Pinstripe/Harold Hunter Print
Original release date: March 13, 2014
The 2014 version of the collaboration focused on paying homage to NYC skating legend Harold Hunter, with a photograph of him used prominently throughout the collection. The first usage was on this bomber jacket, which featured a pinstripe pattern to the front, while the back was emblazoned with a large picture of HH. The reversible piece used CdG SHIRT’s signature polka dot pattern throughout, with an inverted Supreme logo to the reverse.
2014: Harold Hunter Tee
Original release date: March 13, 2014
A simple homage, this Harold Hunter print tee was a subdued way to pay respect to the skater in this collab. A clean and minimal piece, it’s one that’s still unmistakably Supreme despite being a collaboration item.
2015: Tartan Coach Jacket
Original release date: September 24, 2015
The 2015 version of the ongoing collaboration focused on the tartan pattern, which was used frequently by COMME. Kawakubo was originally inspired by the counterculture punk stylings of the fabric and its a spirit that also fuels Supreme’s line. The coach jacket saw the tartan used on the front while co-branding was centered on the back.
2015: Tartan Hoodie
Original release date: September 24, 2015
The second item that garnered attention from the 2015 range was this hoodie, which used the same tartan fabric on the hood and, perhaps more importantly, the co-branding callout was placed on the front. This detail makes it ideal for everyone who wants to showcase their allegiances.
2017: Box Logo T-Shirt
Original release date: April 13, 2017
The 2017 iteration of this collab focused on suiting, but it was this BOGO that stole most of the spotlight. A simple mashup of the Supreme and CdG SHIRT logos, it resulted in one of the most desirable tees from this now five-year-long collaboration.
2017: Nike Air Force 1 Low
Original release date: April 13, 2017
We previously mentioned most of the 2017 spotlight was on the T-shirt because these Nike Air Force 1 Lows certainly garnered their fair share of attention. Using a simple white colorway, the same black-and-white eye print used on the suiting was added to the heel of the AF1, creating both an instantly wearable and instantly desirable piece.
2018: Box Logo T-Shirt
Original release date: September 13, 2018
This year saw another deceptively simple idea — cutting the Supreme logo in half — to great effect. With a callback to the inverted logo from the 2014 collection, this time the ante was upped by the cut-and-sew styling of the iconic logo. Unsurprisingly, it was one of the sellout items from today’s drop.
2018: Box Logo Hoodie
Original release date: September 13, 2018
While this item is essentially the same as the T-shirt, many do prefer the hoodie, so we’ve provided both as options here. As far as the current season options go, it’s a subtle one in comparison to some of the bolder hoodies.
2018: Nike Air Force 1 Low
Original release date: September 13, 2018
For their latest take on the Air Force 1 low, the two brands chopped the Swoosh in two, using a black colorway and adding co-branding to the heel. Like the 2017 version, it’s another simple take on the classic model that’s sure to become a grail when it’s available in November. Took an L on these drops?
