Magnolia Pictures just launched the official trailer for KUSAMA — INFINITY, a forthcoming documentary that spotlights internationally-renowned artist, Yayoi Kusama. Premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the film explores Kusama’s groundbreaking body of work and how she faced great adversity throughout her decades-long career. Alongside significant works including Infinity Mirrored Rooms, the two-minute clip also relays intimate interviews and rare moments before she became the top-selling female artist in the world.
“Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her—the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was a particular shame, and eventually growing old and continuing to pursue and be devoted to her art full time. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork…” expressed Magnolia Pictures.
Watch the official trailer above and expect KUSAMA — INFINITY to hit theaters on September 7. In related news, David Zwirner Books recently unveiled a new monograph on Yayoi Kusama.
