Jared Leto Delivers Heartfelt Speech Honoring Chester Bennington & Chris Cornell at the MTV VMAs
“Your voice was joy, and pain, and anger, and forgiveness, love and heartache all wrapped up into one.”
At the best of times, the MTV VMAs serves to celebrate the most noteworthy contributors in the world of music throughout the year, whether that be through musical performances and/or handing out commemorative accolades for achieving unprecedented accomplishments. However, with the thousands in attendance and millions tuned it at home, the prestigious award ceremony also proves an effective medium to honor fallen heroes. Jared Leto did just that in taking the stage to pay tribute to Chester Bennington, while also acknowledging the tremendous impact of the late Chris Cornell, who fronted legendary rock band, Soundgarden.
Leto, who also leads the group 30 Seconds to Mars, told tales of touring with both icons, as well spoke of their kindness and impact on music. Check out the video above and watch Leto’s heartfelt speech in memorializing two of the most influential musicians of our time, while also reaching out to those who may be battling demons of their own — reminding them that they are never truly alone.
In case you missed it, JAY-Z also honored Chester by performing “Numb/Encore” at Virgin’s V Festival.
