See Dev Hynes Unpack His Writing Process on Pharrell's Beats 1 Show
An insightful look into the inspiration behind tracks from ‘Freetown Sound.’

Dev Hynes – otherwise known as Blood Orange – has joined Pharrell and Scott Vener on their Beats 1 program OTHERtone for an in-depth interview involving his writing process and artistry across the board. In the clip shared by Pharrell’s organization iamOTHER, Hynes runs Pharrell and Vener through the inspiration behind “By Ourselves,” the stunning opening track from his recently-released album, Freetown Sound. As well as revealing the original inspiration for the song – Ashlee Haze’s For Colored Girls (The Missy Elliott Poem) – the multidisciplinary musician also recreates some of the Charles Mingus improvisations that helped to form the final song.
