Nike continues the Free RN‘s “Free Expression” artist series with Shanghai-based, Hong Kong artist Ton Mak, better known as FLABJACKS. Following Korean artist Novo’s DIY-take on the Free RN, FLABJACKS opts for a more vibrant approach with a rainbow-like selection of hues, alongside her trademark friendly creatures.
The brand’s press release offers a bit of background on the young artist: “Ton began creating various characters and narratives after graduating from University College London as an Anthropology student. Tying together her love for art, ethnography and story-telling, Flabjacks are often visual representations of the seemingly mundane. Her work span from art toys, paintings, large sculptures to all sorts of artist collaborations around the world.”
The Free Expression series asks artists “what it means to be free in the cities in which they live,” and for Mak, it’s Shanghai’s flaws that make the city so special and wonderful. “Like wildflowers, it is bright and constantly growing and changing. Rather than pursuing perfection, she embraces every part of her life in Shanghai and goes with the flow.”
The FLABJACKS x Nike Free RN for the “Free Expression” artist series dropped at select Nike retailers and nike.com on April 12, in both men’s and women’s sizes. Be sure to contact your local shop to check availability.
