Watch CHVRCHES' Stripped-Down Cover of Beyoncé’s “XO”
Trading in their usual synthpop sound for something more mellow.
CHVRCHES has been releasing covers of classic tracks as of late. Earlier this month, the Scottish synth-pop band covered The 1975’s “Somebody Else” for BBC Live Lounge. More recently, the trio has returned with another cover song, this time of Beyoncé’s “XO.”
The video finds CHVRCHES performing a stripped-down version of the track. The trio swaps their usual synthpop vibes for something more sentimental and melancholic. Lead singer Lauren Mayberry says that the band made the cover to pay homage to Beyoncé. “It’s one of those moments you don’t forget, the first time you hear a song and it speaks to you,” Martin Doherty adds. “‘XO’ was kind of a moment like that for all of us. We were on tour, all of us losing our minds a little bit.”
