#36: CLOT Put Its NYFW Runway Debut Together In Six Weeks Flat
We caught up with the duo on the eve of Chinese New Year to talk about the brand’s 15-year anniversary collection.
On this week’s episode of HYPEBEAST Radio, we caught up with CLOT co-founders Edison Chen and Kevin Poon. We met up with Edison and Poon at the Gramercy Park Hotel just after the duo’s first-ever NYFW runway show—the presentation was a veritable who’s-who of streetwear: Nigel Sylvester and Aleali May walked the runway, showcasing collaborations with brands like Fear Of God and Expert Horror, all to a soundtrack befitting a Hong Kong gangster flick.
Speaking to Kevin and Edison, it’s clear that the entire collection was one elaborate collaboration. “We could not have done this without our friends,” says Edison. “And friends aren’t made overnight.” The designers also note that the decision was somewhat sudden, even for them — the designers found out they had been awarded a CFDA grant at the tail-end of last-year and decided practically on a whim. “We had an opportunity to work with CFDA in this partnership with China, and that was how the nucleus of this started,” says Poon. “When we started really thinking about the show’s music selection,” chimes in Edison: “That’s when we realized it needed some emotion and motion.”
Over the course our hourlong conversation, the entrepreneurial duo touch on the origins of their relationship (they met on the basketball court); the challenges of putting together a runway collection in just six weeks; and what lies ahead for CLOT in the new year.
