Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming horror film Brightburn. The opening scene of the movie offers a familiar superhero narrative where a couple living on a pastoral farm, played by Elizabeth Banks and David Denman, witness the collision of a spaceship from another planet. Their prayers are answered when the aircraft contains a baby and they adopt him as their own.

Instead of becoming a superhero dedicated to helping mankind analogous to Superman, the plot takes a dark turn as the child starts using his powers to harm people. The film opens up a genre of “superhero horror” which presents a subversive take on prevalent comic book tropes. Produced by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, catch Brightburn in theaters starting May 27, 2019.
