The Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor Super Fight Still Has Thousands of Unsold Tickets Left

Though there’s been a lot of hype surrounding the upcoming super fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, it looks like tickets are still available for the event being held on August 26. According to Tim Dahlberg of the Associated Press, “a check online Saturday revealed hundreds — even thousands — of seats still available” firsthand on Ticketmaster after they were initially made available to the public last Monday. However, there could be some rational reasons for that.

As Dahlberg noted, the cheapest tickets still available on Ticketmaster have a face value of $3,500 USD — excluding approximately $300 USD worth of fees associated with the purchase. Prices then reach up to $10,000 USD for ringside seats and the VIP “Platinum” tickets are nearly $15,000 USD.

“There’s fairly little sales going on in general,” said Chris Leyden, a content analyst for SeatGeek.com. “I think a lot of it has to do with where prices are now. I think people are a little uncomfortable paying this much or maybe even more.”

On the other hand, it appears promoters aren’t worried. Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions told the Associated Press that they are “very excited and very happy with ticket sales so far. We’re well on our way to smashing our own record which transcended the sport.”

So far the highest grossing boxing match — billed as “The Fight of the Century” — was 2015’s Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao which grossed about $600 million USD. If tickets for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight do sell out, it has a shot at breaking the record-setting $72,198,500 USD gate from Mayweather’s fight against Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Garden Arena — which seats 16,800 compared to T-Mobile Arena’s 20,000.
