After his turn as Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy is returning to the world of superheroes and taking on yet another villainous role in a big screen adaptation — this time for Marvel. Sony Pictures took to Twitter earlier this afternoon to officially announce the long-awaited Spider-Man spinoff, Venom — and Hardy is signed on to star as the titular character. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will be at the helm while Hardy will put his own spin on a character that last hit the big screen with Topher Grace in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Venom is slated to hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
