Shaq to Run for Sheriff in 2020
“This is not about politics. This is about bringing people closer together.”

Hall-of-Famer Shaquille O’Neal announced on NBC’s evening news in Atlanta his plans to run for sheriff in 2020. “This is not about politics. This is about bringing people closer together,” he said to a WXIA reporter. “You know, when I was coming up, people loved and respected the police, the deputies. And I want to be the one to bring that back, especially in the community I serve.”
Shaq’s interest in law enforcement dates all the way back to his days in Los Angeles where he went through the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Reserve Academy and became a reserve officer with the Port Police. Having held a number of honorary — and earned — positions over the last decade-plus, the TNT analyst was most recently sworn in as a sheriff’s deputy in Jonesboro, Georgia back in December 2016.
Although he has yet to decide where he would submit his candidacy — be it Georgia or Florida, where he resides — Shaq argues that he appeals to all voters. “I can put on a suit and have a conversation with Bill Gates. I can go in the hood and talk to the homies, and talk to the children.”
