G-Star RAW Unveils Aitor Throup's "Raw Research II" Collection
A second dose of the brand in its purest form.

Led by its Executive Creative Director Aitor Throup, the G-Star RAW innovation lab has unveiled its second line of experimental Raw Research products as part of a new capsule collection. Continuing where its predecessor left off, “Raw Research II” combines opposing elements with a view to pushing the boundaries of denim, bringing together the conflicting ideas of tradition and future-facing design.
The collection’s headline innovation comes in the form of its “Motac” series — a new 3D denim concept putting into practice a detailed study of the human body in motion. With the “Motac-X” jean as a key piece, combining motocross garment construction with classic denim design, the series takes biker-inspired principles of movement and applies them to constructed garments in the lab’s latest effort effort to change the way we perceive denim.
In a further move forward since 2016’s first Raw Research collection, “Raw Research II” also introduces both footwear and accessories into the mix. Emblematic of the innovation lab’s core principles, the “Raw Research Rovulc” is a contemporary take on 1930s footwear — a vulcanized summer shoe with a military-esque zip fastening system and lace guards.
Described as the G-Star RAW’s “design DNA in its purest form,” “Raw Research II” will be available worldwide at selected retailers from June 1, including Dover Street Market in London, Tokyo and New York.
