James Turrell has Built an Observatory in the Roden Crater
The pioneering light and space artist wants you to see the stars differently.
Though still in progress, light artist James Turrell has been working with astronomers on building an observatory in the extinct volcano that is now the Roden Crater in Arizona. When complete, the structure will not only bring art and nature together, but also revive the ancient traditions of star gazing. Different events throughout the year — solstices and meteor showers — will be open to be experienced in new ways as chambers and tunnels have been designed with carefully calculated alignments and apertures. For a demonstration of one of these tunnels at work, take a look at the video below where one becomes a telescope for viewing the moon. No official word of when the observatory will open but for those curious, they can support and learn more about the project online here
