After a month filled with elusive video and photo teasers, Yashica has finally taken the wraps off its anticipated “Unprecedented” camera. The Y35 is a hybrid device that captures digital images using “pretend” rolls of film, as per the company in a statement—officially labeling it as a “digiFilm” camera.

For specs, the small shooter boasts a 35mm f/2.8 glass lens alongside a 1/3.2-inch CMOS sensor that is capable of emitting 14-megapixel images. Additionally, the device touts a built-in viewfinder, a shallow depth of field of about three feet, five shutter speeds (1s, 1/30s, 1/60s, 1/250s, 1/500s), a micro USB port, a tripod mount, a battery port to house a pair of AA batteries, and an automatic setting that helps users find the right exposure.

Each roll has distinct ISO and aspect ratios. As with traditional film practices, photographers will need to manually exchange each roll after use. Not to mention, it takes a while for the camera to kickstart after the roll has been swapped. Why the hassle? Well, Yashica expressed that “it grants us time to inspire and think, the exact moment the shutter snaps.” Having added that “there will be 4 different digiFilm rolls at launch: ISO 1600 High Speed, Black & White (ISO 400), ISO 200 Ultra Fine (standard color photos), and 120 Format.”

Yashica has created a Kickstarter page for the Y35. Those who pledge approximately $150 USD will receive the camera alongside four unique digiFilm rolls. Shipping is slated to commence sometime in April 2018.
