Square Enix Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of 'Final Fantasy VII' With a Remake Teaser
A sliver of hope for the long awaited release?

Way back at PlayStation Experience 2015, Square Enix finally showed off gameplay for its long rumored Final Fantasy VII remake after officially confirming the game’s existence at E3 earlier that summer. In the year-plus since, though, all has been quiet on the modern FF7 front — until today.
In celebration of the game’s 20-year anniversary (it dropped on January 31, 1997) and the series’ ongoing 30th anniversary festivities, Square Enix offered up a “key visual” from the remake earlier today. In what essentially looks like a hi-res still from 2005’s CG Final Fantasy VII film, Advent Children, Cloud appears alongside his trusty Buster Sword with the Shinra Building in the background — a not-so-subtle nod to the game’s original box art. Sadly, however, the image was all Square Enix offered up — a new trailer is nowhere in sight and no new info for the game was volunteered by the developer, either.
Here’s to hoping the remake hits consoles somewhere closer to Final Fantasy VII‘s 20th anniversary and not its 25th.
