'Master of the Shadows': Yohji Yamamoto Discusses His Immense Passion for Design
“I was almost losing my enthusiasm for making clothing.”
In a new short documentary called Master of the Shadows, legendary designer Yohji Yamamoto reflects on his ongoing collaboration with adidas, and his immense passion for design. More specifically, Yamamoto discusses how his “sporty but elegant” Y-3 line brought stirrings of unequaled ardor during a time when his own gusto for fashion seemed lost. “Around 15 years ago, I felt that I had come too far from the street,” he says. “I was almost losing my enthusiasm for making clothing.” Musing on his decision to collaborate with The Three Stripes, the Japanese doyen of couture said that it was “time to care for the body”—it was now appropriate to show the world that futuristic sportswear is beautiful and thus, the duo worked together to make Y-3 into an international stunner.
Following the short doc is another video that spotlights Y-3 senior design director Lawrence Midwood. In it, Midwood illustrates the meticulous process that goes on to produce the 2016 fall/winter Y-3 collection. Check it out below.
