Nicolas Winding Refn has a penchant for stylized cinema. Be it Drive’s laconic neo-noir, Only God Forgives‘ hypersaturated, minimalist tension, or the intense period drama of Valhalla Rising, the Danish-born director rarely returns to the same well twice. His next film, The Neon Demon, tells the harrowing story of a model (played by Elle Fanning) making her way to Los Angeles, only to discover that the City of Angels is a den of darkness.
