Quartz Debuts a New Mobile News App That Texts You All Day

One of the biggest challenges facing news publications today is undoubtedly the struggle to compete with the attention of millennials, who are most often found glued to the screens of Snapchat and Instagram. One particularly unusual way in which Quartz has done so is with its new eponymous mobile news app which, instead of presenting news stories in a conventional story-by-story format, instead works something like a (somewhat annoyingly persistent) news anchor texting you all day. Should you choose to tap into the notification, the app will open a chat window where you can choose between two canned responses: one to egg the app on with the current story, or “Next.” Designed to “put aside existing notions about news apps,” the app also allows for options such as a a haiku to mark the close of financial markets at day’s end. While the response has been trepidatious at best, curious news seekers can try out the app here.
