FIFA Announces Inaugural "The Best FIFA Football Awards"
Separate of Ballon d’Or.
Having recently ended its partnership with France Football’s Ballon d’Or, FIFA has announced today that it will now hand out its own awards, starting January 9, 2017 in Zurich. This is the first time since 2009 that FIFA will crown its own Player of the Year, separate of Ballon d’Or, who merged together back in 2010.
The FIFA men’s and women’s player and coach awards will be decided by a two-part process: The votes of captains and head coaches from all of the world’s national teams will make up 50% of the result, while the other half will be split between an online public ballot and more than 200 media representatives from around the world.
A 23-man list of nominees for player of the year will be named this Friday, November 3, and will be narrowed down to just three by December 2. For more on this year’s awards, head over to FIFA.com.
