As part of Amazon’s expansion of its Amazon Studios venture, the e-commerce giant recently announced it has signed Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee for his next film Chiraq. As the title already hints, the film will focus on the city’s ongoing gun violence troubles, and Lee is reportedly trying to get Samuel L. Jackson and Chicago natives Jeremy Piven, Common and Kanye West on board. This latest move is an effort to increase subscribers with original content, with Amazon previously promising it would be producing 12 feature films a year in order to “benefit filmmakers who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
