Artist Creates Custom "Chi-Raq" Air Jordan IVs for Spike Lee
Drawing inspiration from the movie’s most pivotal points.

In honor of Spike Lee’s latest film Chi-Raq, Cleveland-based artist Van Monroe created a custom pair of sneakers for the two-time Academy Award-nominated director. Taking the Air Jordan Retro IV “Oreos,” Monroe utilized artwork from the movie poster to mirror details along the toe box and heel counter, in addition to mimicking the overall color scheme. To top it off, he also designed a custom painted box prominently displaying the main character, Lysistrata, who is played by actress Teyonah Parris. This is the second pair of customs we’ve seen Monroe create for Lee, as he previously designed a pair of “He Got Game” Air Jordan XIIIs, which Lee wore during the NBA All-Star game in February earlier this year.
Monroe started off his career by painting on traditional canvases, later moving onto sneakers and clothing. He has created artwork for high-profile clients including President Barack Obama, will.i.am, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez, and his work has been added to the Smithsonian Museum collection.
