Update: The new year is here and so is the rollout of more Lunar New Year campaigns. Nike Basketball is kicking things off this week with the release of the first Kobe 5 Protro “Year of the Mamba” colorway and is due to drop this “University Red” iteration the following week. We now have official imagery of the kicks, further highlighting the red and gold build that we detailed below while also showcasing the pair’s special shoe box and carrying bag. Release is now anticipated for January 18 via Nike SNKRS and select retailers at an adjusted retail price of $200 USD.
Original Story: As we look ahead to Nike Basketball’s 2025 plans, the Kobe line is expected to play an even bigger role after it grew nearly four times in size during Nike’s last fiscal year. The Kobe 5 and 9 Elite Protro are two of the latest silhouettes to return, with the former set to celebrate the Year of the Snake in an already-spotted purple colorway, as well as a “University Red” iteration shown above.
As with the aforementioned “Eggplant” iteration, a golden snake wraps around the lateral Swoosh which appears in black. Unlike the other pair, the toe sees an additional hit of gold alongside the tongue detailing while a bright “University Red” occupies a majority of the upper and midsole.
At the time of writing, Nike Basketball has not announced its release plans for both of its upcoming “Year of the Mamba” colorways of the Kobe 5 Protro. Stay tuned for updates, including official imagery of both pairs, as we currently expect this “University Red” style to drop on January 16 of next year via Nike SNKRS and select retailers at a starting price of $190 USD.
