Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto is the eponymous brand of Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto founded in 1972. His most commercially successful line is Yohji Yamamoto (men’s and women’s) and Y’s. Other principal lines include Pour Homme, Costume d’Homme and the diffusion line ComingSoon. Of notable collaborations, Yamamoto collaborated with adidas on Y-3, an ongoing collection of sportswear and couture fused into one. Yamamoto began his first brand, “Y’s” and debuted its inaugural collection in Tokyo in 1977 and a men’s line two years later, in 1979. By 1980, Yamamoto moved his atelier to Paris, showing at Paris Fashion Week with a men’s collection named Y’s For Men. His spring/summer 1983 pieces were different and unlike the aristocratic and bourgeois fashion Paris was used to, heralding images of refugee rags hung upon guile-faced models -- the public was outraged, but some recognized the historical references, naming the collection “Hiroshima Chic.” 1984 saw Yamamoto’s first full “Yohji Yamamoto Menswear” collection. A year later, the brand’s first Japanese boutique opened up, named Aoyama Superposition, followed by London in 1986 and New York in 1987. During the 1990s, Yamamoto designed many costumes for theater and honed his dramatic styles. In 1999, Yamamoto’s daughter, Limi Yamamoto, joined the company, and by 2002 designed her own line called Limi Feu. In 2008, the designer launched the Yohji Yamamoto Fund for Peace. Poor decisions at the brand’s management caused the company to have $65 million USD in debt. However, following a restructure of the company by Yamamoto, by November 2010 the company was out of debt and avoided bankruptcy.
