Description

Nicolas Ghesquière is a French fashion designer, currently at the helm of Louis Vuitton. At age 15, he began interning at agnes B. during summer, and then went on to take an apprenticeship at Corinne Cobson. After returning home and completing his studies, Ghesquière landed an internship at Jean Paul Gaultier, which led him to a job at Pôles designing its knitwear line. In 1995, Ghesquière joined Balenciaga, handling its licensing for the Asian market and designing funeral clothes. He was then made a surprise choice for creative director for the flagging house, which had struggled to find success after the 1970’s. At the young age of 27, Ghesquière replaced Josephus Thimster, who was fired after an unsuccessful show. Ghesquière’s designs were immediately popular, reviving the French label and reestablishing it as a critically acclaimed fashion house. His time at the house was also very commercially successful, and was influential on other designers. In 2012, it was announced that Ghesquiere would leave his post as creative director after 15 years on the job, to be replaced by Alexander Wang. A year later, he was named creative director of Louis Vuitton, replacing Marc Jacobs.
