Vertical has officially unveiled the eerie debut trailer for Pendulum, marking the feature directorial debut of Black Swan screenwriter Mark Heyman. The psychological horror film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Phoebe Dynevor, and is slated to arrive in theaters on New Year’s Day 2027.
Produced by Darren Aronofsky through his Protozoa Pictures banner alongside producers Jacob and Dave, the New Mexico-set thriller follows married couple Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail (Dynevor) as they travel to an isolated new-age retreat seeking recovery following a traumatic event. While Patrick seeks to support his wife, he quickly grows suspicious of the camp’s enigmatic spiritual leader (Jacki Weaver) as Abigail falls deeper under her influence. The ensemble cast also features Jena Malone and Norman Reedus.
Heyman revealed that the narrative is deeply personal and inspired by his own family lore, with filming taking place in his home state of New Mexico where the actual events occurred. The atmospheric preview highlights the escalating paranoia between the couple as they struggle to decipher whether the commune’s esoteric practices offer true enlightenment or conceal a destructive threat.
Pendulum is scheduled to release in theaters nationwide via Vertical on January 1, 2027.
