For design lovers and digital creators, a desk is rarely just a place to park a laptop. It’s a carefully curated studio space where every detail, from a custom mechanical keyboard and monitor arm to a thoughtfully chosen desk mat, serves a purpose. But one essential element has often been overlooked: lighting designed around the way people use screens. As screens became central to how we work, create, and connect, desk lighting has not always kept pace with the needs of a screen-centered workspace. BenQ set out to rethink workspace lighting as an essential part of the digital ecosystem, bringing together human-centered design and optical expertise to create a lighting experience purpose-built for the digital workspace.

BenQ’s approach to desk lighting extends beyond a one-size-fits-all solution. From the ScreenBar® models designed for a wide range of monitors to the iScreenBar, designed to complement the iMac’s distinctive silhouette, to the ScreenBar Max, developed for dual-monitor setups, each product reflects a considered approach to industrial design and the needs of different workspaces. Every curve, finish, and material choice is made to respect the underlying hardware. As JC Pan, Head of the Digital Lifestyle Product Business Unit at BenQ, explains: “The initial mounting concept proved workable, so subsequent iterations focused on refining it rather than replacing it with a different approach. The main challenge was to integrate iScreenBar with the iMac’s silhouette while maintaining microphone clearance and a secure mount.” That hyper-fixation on detail went so far as using acoustic frequency-response measurements to design mount cutouts that wouldn’t muffle the iMac’s internal microphones, paired with hidden magnetic cable organizers to keep Apple’s iconic logo completely unobstructed.

Beyond Brightness: Lighting for Visual Comfort

Beyond pure aesthetics, BenQ approaches desktop illumination as a way to support visual comfort for long-haul creators. After an eight-hour editing session, screen brightness may not be the only factor contributing to visual discomfort; strong lighting contrast between a glowing display and a dark room can also play a role. By pairing full-spectrum LEDs with precise color temperature control, creators can shift seamlessly from energizing cool light, up to 6500K on iScreenBar, for example, during daytime brainstorms to a warm, relaxing 2700K setting during midnight sessions. On dual-monitor setups, ScreenBar Max takes ambient balance even further by illuminating the wall behind the screens, drastically softening the harsh contrast between bright displays and their background.

The Unique Optical Engineering: ASYM-Light™

The optical engineering driving this experience is equal parts math and physics. “The core of BenQ’s ASYM-Light™ technology is an exclusive, eight-segment curved reflector,” says Pan. “BenQ simulates millions of light paths to determine the optimal combination of curves, shaping each beam to illuminate the work surface with minimal spill.” Made from pure-silver coated PVD aluminum with over 98% reflectivity, this precision mirror system bends light downward onto the desk while light-absorbing outlets catch any remaining stray rays, ensuring zero glare hits the glass or the user’s eyes.

From User Insights to Continuous Innovation

Behind ScreenBar is a deeper foundation of optical research and user-centered innovation, developed through BenQ’s Smart Lighting Lab. While traditional lighting design assumed brighter desks equaled better visibility, real-world testing with heavy screen users revealed the exact opposite. As Pan recalls: “As early as 2015, through in-depth interviews with heavy screen users, we discovered a counterintuitive insight: many creators preferred working in extremely dim or completely dark environments to maintain a sense of immersion. During early prototype testing, creators’ unexpected complaint was not that the lighting was insufficient, but that ‘too much light actually disrupted the visual depth and contrast of the screen.’”

That key realization fundamentally altered BenQ’s approach: the goal wasn’t to flood a room with lumens, but to deliver exact, controlled light precisely where reading and writing happen while preserving screen contrast. That thinking takes different forms in different workspaces: iScreenBar complements the iMac’s design, while ScreenBar Max’s ASYM-TriZone Light™ redistributes light to address the coverage challenges of dual-monitor setups. Though designed for different setups, both reflect the same philosophy: understand how people work, then shape the lighting around their needs. As Pan puts it, “great lighting is not about making everything brighter but about delivering the right light to the right place.”
