The Dream Golf Trip Through the Canadian Rockies

Exploring Fairmont’s three iconic Canadian Rockies properties, and three different alpine experiences.

There are golf trips you come home from needing another vacation. You know, the kinds where you’re stacking rounds back-to-back and spending car rides with roller bags on your lap. But over six nights in the Canadian Rockies this September, recovery and relaxation was given as much consideration as the rounds themselves.

Fairmont hosted our group across three of its mountain properties: Fairmont Banff Springs, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Golf was a big part of the itinerary, with rounds at two Stanley Thompson designs. Around those rounds were forest bathing, hiking, thermal bathing and enough time outdoors to make the distinction between activity and relaxation feel less obvious.

The trip introduced us to Fairmont’s Wellness Without Walls campaign, which launched earlier this year with Kylian Mbappé as the brand’s first Wellness Ambassador. Across these three properties, the idea had a clear proposition: make it easier for guests to stay active, recover and spend time in their surroundings.

Through its partnership with Hyperice, Fairmont offers access to recovery tools including Normatec compression boots, a Hypervolt massage gun and a Venom heated vibration wrap for the back. The Nike gear lending program addresses a simpler obstacle: arriving somewhere with the intention of exercising and realizing you haven’t packed for it. Shoes and workout clothing can be borrowed during a stay.

These are useful things to have available when you travel, particularly if you want to keep your luggage manageable. Over the week, though, the strongest expression of the wellness proposition came from the places themselves.

Banff: Golf Beneath the Peaks

Fairmont Banff Springs makes an impression before you have done very much at all. The castle-like hotel has a European grandeur, with stone corridors, period details and a scale that makes getting slightly lost feel like part of the stay. It is rugged and imposing from outside; inside, there always seems to be another staircase or room to discover.

Down at the golf course, the mountains present their own architectural presence. On the Stanley Thompson 18, they sit so close to your sight lines that it can be difficult to separate the hole in front of you from everything rising behind it. There is the shot you need to hit, and then there is the view competing for your attention.

We played the 18-hole course as well as the separate Tunnel Mountain 9, seeing Banff in both moody early-fall weather and clear sunshine. Under clouds, the landscape felt enclosed and atmospheric. When the sky opened, the surrounding peaks came into view with a clarity that changed our sense of the place.

The schedule gave us reasons to look beyond the golf, too. A guided forest-bathing walk with a certified guide on the resort’s activities team offered another way to spend time in the same landscape. Meals reconvened the group, while a Hyperice recovery lounge at the clubhouse connected the performance element of the trip directly to our time on the course.

Lake Louise: Step Outside

At Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, the relationship between the hotel and the landscape is even more connected. The hotel sits directly on Lake Louise, within Banff National Park and the wider Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. The familiar postcard is right there: turquoise water, steep mountain walls and the Victoria Glacier beyond. Seeing it from the hotel, then walking outside and finding yourself at the edge of it, is another experience entirely. The color of the lake is difficult to appreciate fully through a screen.

That convenience defined our stay. One morning, we stepped out for a roughly four-hour guided hike, swapping the busy lakeshore for trails and elevated views. Later, we took canoes across the lake toward the hotel. Over the course of a day, the same scene could be something you looked out at, walked through and paddled across.

Lake Louise has no golf course. It did, however, offer the most concentrated recovery experience of the trip. BASIN Glacial Waters, which opened in September 2025, adds an indoor-outdoor thermal bathing destination to a hotel that already has a treatment-based spa. Having both initially sounds extravagant. Once inside, the distinction becomes clear: BASIN is organized around heat, cold, water and rest, with the lake and mountains remaining part of the experience.

Our first visit followed the golf at Banff, with a guided recovery sequence. The next afternoon, we returned for a longer session, including a private two-hour window in which our group could photograph and film the facilities before the usual no-tech policy resumed. The setting makes it easy to linger. Between a morning on the trail and an afternoon moving through the thermal experience, a day without golf felt fully occupied without becoming overloaded.

The Road to Jasper

The journey north to Jasper deserves plenty of time to savor it. The Icefields Parkway runs through a landscape that keeps offering reasons to stop. We had a clear day for the drive and broke it up with an icefield, a waterfall, a lake and a lookout. There were far more potential stops than we could reasonably make. Even the stretches between them demanded attention. For much of the route, phone service disappeared. With so much outside the window, there was little reason to miss it.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge offered another change of pace. A central Main Lodge anchors the property, with cabins and other accommodations spread around Lac Beauvert. After the scale of Banff Springs and the constant activity around Lake Louise, Jasper felt more spacious. The mountains were still there, but they seemed to step back a little, and arriving felt like an exhale.

Its golf course rewarded that extra space in the itinerary. Another Stanley Thompson design, Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club was impressive on the first round and more interesting on the second. There is enough subtlety in the routing and the decisions it asks of you that familiarity becomes valuable quickly. Seeing a hole once gives you a better sense of how you might want to play it next time.

We had the benefit of local professional insight into the course’s history and strategy. Our first round included associate golf professional Nick Armour, whose perspective added context to what we were seeing. By the end of the second round, we had a fuller appreciation of the course and were glad to have had the chance to return.

The aftermath of the 2024 wildfire was also part of our experience of Jasper. Its effects were visible, giving the stay a context beyond the scenery and hospitality. Alongside those reminders, we encountered a destination continuing to welcome people back. A free afternoon left room to choose how much more activity we wanted: hiking, a bike ride, or a glacial plunge and sauna. By then, the freedom to decide felt as valuable as any particular amenity.

Across six nights, the trip immersed us in three different versions of the Rockies: Banff’s time capsule, Lake Louise’s grandeur and Jasper’s room to breathe. Although golf gave us a familiar way into the landscape, hiking and recovery time gave us a way to truly relax into it.
