Brazilian architecture firm Hersen Mendes Arquitetura was commissioned to build a an artist’s home on a woodland property in Brazil’s Cerrado. While boasting a decidedly Modernist sensibility, the home’s ecologically conscious design is rooted in respect for the native vegetation and landscape, inspiring the name Casa Das 7 Árvores (House of 7 Trees).

Seven key trees on the property guided the plans, which took account for the pre-existing greenery, which was mapped, preserved, and incorporated into the architectural process. With a plan that unfolds into undulating wings and corrdiors, the house is partially supported by thick tree like pillars, evoking Brazil’s Brutalist architectural tradition.

However, eco-friendly BTC bricks made from local clay and yellow metallic brises soften the effect of the home with rich natural hues, while also insulating the structure from the sun. In addition to these intentional design details, the house runs on a photovoltaic energy system, supplementing its energy consumption.

Inside, the continuation of brick walls is complemented by green and brown wall treatments, including subway tile and joinery. On the floors, Bahia Beige marble mirror the mulch ground coverings in the patio, creating a synergy between the inside and the outside of the home. Throughout the quarters of the house, large floor to ceiling windows allow sun to pour into different areas and reflect the yellow light from the panels on the exterior.
