Ahead of Hypebeast Flea New York on May 18 and 19, Hypebeast is spotlighting each of the event’s more than 30 vendors by giving an overview of their practice, their inspirations, and what they plan to bring to the event. Hypebeast Flea New York is free to attend — RSVP HERE

Phillip “PHILLLLLTHY” Leyesa has established a world-renowned reputation for transforming the ordinary into one-of-a-kind masterpieces, tapping into traditional Japanese techniques like Boro and Sashiko stitching and indigo dying. Based out of Brooklyn, NY, Leyesa’s work has caught the eyes of many industry leaders, with his eroded Dior x Air Jordan 1 High for Daniel Arsham and his dye-inspired adidas NMD S1 collaboration serving as some of his best-known creations. Scoring one of his 1:1 bespoke garments is no easy task, but he’ll be serving them up all weekend at Hypebeast Flea New York, alongside pieces from his own apparel label. Check out some of his work — and learn more about what he’s got planned for the event — below.

Explain your brand to people who may not know you yet.

My design inspiration is heavily influenced by Japanese mending techniques and making something out of seemingly nothing, with work ranging from distressing to dyeing, hand-sewing, cut & sewn pieces and patchwork. My creative process doesn’t follow any specific plan. It’s very DIY. I love working with my hands and learning new techniques while working on different projects.

What about New York inspires you the most?

The people, the culture, but most importantly the hustle. You gotta put the work in or you’ll get left behind, it’s the NYC mentality. Keep it pushing and don’t look back.

What have you got planned at Hypebeast Flea New York?

I plan on showing people not only my work but my vibe as a person and as an artist and how that collides. I will be selling some custom 1/1 pieces, a few items from my website and a lot of my clothes that I don’t wear anymore.

What other vendors are you looking forward to checking out at Hypebeast Flea New York?

Most definitely ESENES WORLDWIDE. Justin [Son, ESENES WORLDWIDE founder] been killing it since day one. His creative mindset is like none other. He’s the big bro for real.
