Blood Orange Performs "Jewelry" On Black Power Live Benefit Broadcast
In a show hosted by Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors.
Late last week, Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors announced a new initiative titled Black Power Live, a performance series featuring a range of musicians, poets and activists, all in an effort to raise money for different charities. Dev Hynes, frequently known as the artist Blood Orange, delivered a moving solo performance of “Jewelry” which he posted late last night on his personal YouTube page.
The initial show was hosted live on Twitch on Saturday and featured quite the guest list with artists like Denzel Curry, Doja Cat, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, activist Emma Gonzalez, Miguel and more showing their support through either speaking appearances and performances. Proceeds went directly to organizations combatting social injustices like Sankofa, Transgender Law Center, Trap Heals, Black Men Build and Crenshaw Dairy Mart.
“Jewelry” dates back to Blood Orange’s 2018 project Negro Swan. Here, he ditches the jazz-infused synths and uplifting drum punches with a bare-bones electric guitar rendition. Last year, Hynes released his follow-up to Negro Swan, his critically-acclaimed Angel’s Pulse mixtape.
