Tim Cook confirmed Apple Intelligence will not remain entirely free, signaling paid add-ons for heavy users.

Server-side processing costs will drive a freemium model where power users can "buy up the stack."

The revamped Siri AI is currently in iOS 27 public beta ahead of its official fall rollout.

During Apple‘s Q3 2026 earnings call on July 30, 2026, outgoing CEO Tim Cook delivered a reality check for users anticipating unlimited access to the highly anticipated Siri AI. Cook signaled that heavy reliance on the new generative tools will likely come with a price tag. The comments mark the first official acknowledgment that Apple Intelligence features will not remain entirely free for high-volume users.

Apple reported a massive $109.4 billion USD in revenue for the June quarter. Amid the financial breakdown, Goldman Sachs questioned how the tech giant plans to offset the massive computing costs associated with server-side AI processing. Cook kept the exact pricing structure vague but confirmed that heavy users will need to open their wallets. He noted that the company anticipates a dedicated segment of users who will push the limits of the system.

To accommodate this demand, Cook stated that the brand will introduce upgrade possibilities on iCloud+ where consumers can buy up the stack. This phrasing indicates a shift from simply requiring a base cloud subscription. Power users might need to pay an additional premium strictly for extended server access.

The underlying cost stems from how the new features operate. Apple designed its tools to process as much data on-device as possible to protect user privacy and minimize server overhead. Complex tasks still require offloading to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers and partner networks like Google Gemini. Running massive language models in the cloud requires significant infrastructure investment. A freemium model mirrors the strategy already utilized by other major chatbot developers.

The revamped digital assistant is currently available to testers in the iOS 27 public beta. The update brings a conversational interface and the ability to take action across multiple apps. With the general release slated for September, users have a limited window before Apple defines exactly where the free tier ends and the paid subscription begins.
