Marvel Studios is officially expanding its cosmic universe by bringing the long-rumored superhero Nova to the big screen. The studio has tapped acclaimed writer and Loki showrunner Michael Waldron to develop a feature film centered on the iconic comic book character.
The upcoming project marks a significant shift in strategy for the character’s live-action debut. Marvel initially intended to develop Nova as an episodic streaming series for Disney+ before officially shelving that iteration in 2025. Waldron has now been brought on board to completely re-engineer the script into a theatrical feature film, with the added possibility of directing the project if it secures an official green light. The narrative will spotlight Richard Rider, a human who gains superhuman abilities after being chosen by the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps.
The choice of Waldron solidifies his prominent role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s creative core. His extensive resume with the studio already includes writing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness along with the highly anticipated blockbusters Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While official casting has not yet begun, Waldron—who co-created the Hulu series Chad Powers alongside Glen Powell—has previously voiced his desire to see Powell step into the lead role.
